Introduction to Marathi Barakhadi
Marathi Barakhadi (मराठी बाराखडी) is an important tool in order to learn the Marathi language. It is widely used in schools and acts as a foundation of this language. Like Hindi, the Marathi language also uses the same Devanagari script and has the same barakhadi.
Earlier, the Marathi language used to be written in the Modi script. But, they’ve now adopted the Devanagari script and share the same letters as Hindi. Hence, you’ll find similarities between the barakhadi of these two widely spoken languages in India.
What is Marathi Barakhadi? (मराठी बाराखडी)
Marathi Barakhadi refers to the consonant-vowel system in Marathi that you need to learn in order to read and write the language properly.
It is the foundation that helps build Marathi words and sentences, just like the English alphabet is vital for English literacy.
The Marathi Barakhadi consists of 52 letters, which can be divided into two categories: vowels (स्वर वर्णमाला) and consonants (व्यंजन).
The vowels ऋ (ṛ) and ऌ (ḷ) are also used in Marathi but they are not considered part of the core 13 vowels (स्वर वर्णमाला).
These 13 vowels can stand alone or be combined with consonants to form syllables and words. Getting the vowel sounds right is key to mastering barakhadi.
